Dear 7th grade PoCoParents:
We will be offering an advanced math class, high school Math I, to rising eighth graders who are ready for and interested in that challenge. Students who take Math I will also take eighth grade math. They will have two math credits in 8th grade.
The 8th grade Math I class is a high school class for high school credit, so students should expect more homework, higher standards for class conduct, and a strict grading scale. In addition, students must be independently motivated. As such, we require all students interested in taking this advanced class to complete a summer middle school topics review to ensure that they are ready for this challenge and are able to work well independently. The ability to work hard independently is a GREATER indicator of long term success in honors classes than the “natural” talent a student has in math. We are looking for students who want to work hard and be challenged. This assignment will be on khanacademy.org, or you can request a textbook version if internet access is an issue (though you won’t have built in supports with a text version). Your child does not have to get any particular minimum score above a 0, but does need to watch all videos and attempt all problem sets with their best effort.
In determining proper placement for students, the following are required:
1. Your child’s interest and your family commitment, indicated through this survey: https://bit.ly/Math1_2022_2023
2. Successful completion of the summer math review assignment, assigned on Khan Academy and due July 31, 2021. To add the course, visit khanacademy.org/join with code NYZH3WSU
Thank you for your support in growing a truly stellar math program for our kids! It takes all of us and we can't tell you how much we appreciate your support!
BK and all the math peeps
