Dear Parent/Caregiver,
The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) is asking your permission for your child to take a survey about their math education. We want feedback from students to identify which parts of math education are going well for them and others they feel could be better. This feedback will help the WVDE plan supports for the 2024-2025 school year.
The survey will take 10 to 20 minutes, and we are asking teachers to give the surveys at school. It is anonymous and confidential. Your child will not be asked for their name, and their individual responses will not be shared. Taking the survey is as safe as any other school-related work your child would do on any normal day. If your child experiences any discomfort while taking the survey, they may stop at any time and address their concerns to their teacher. There are no rewards or payment for participating, and there are no penalties for not participating. Although your child may not benefit directly, their feedback may help the WVDE provide better support to help WV students and schools.
If you allow your child to participate in the survey, please write their name below, sign your name, and return this form to your child’s teacher. When the teacher gives students the survey link, your child will be asked if they want to take the survey and they are free to opt out. If you do not want your child to take the survey, you may ignore this form.

For questions about the math program we are studying, you may contact Tim Flatley (tflatley@k12.wv.us). For questions about the study, you may contact Zach Paitsel (zachary.paitsel@k12.wv.us). This study has been reviewed and approved by the WVDE Institutional Review Board (IRB-WVDE-055).
If you do not wish for your child to participate in this, please send note with student tomorrow or call by 9:00 am.
Summer break is just around the corner!
Summative assessment testing begins on Wednesday with 8th grade. 7th and 6th grade will test the following week. If you are going to be absent, please see office to arrange testing. Please get rest, eat a good breakfast and try your hardest!
We will be collecting, inventorying and invoicing laptops on May 20th. Students will be billed for lost device, lost charger, broken keyboard and/or broken screen. Invoices will be coming from our IT department if you did not purchase insurance at the beginning of the year.
For any 8th grade student interested in joining marching band next year, there will be a parent meeting at PCHS on May 8 at 7 pm.
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to the staff of MMS! Thank you for all that you do for our students, staff and families!
Congratulations to Mrs. Felicia Smith for Pocahontas County Service Personnel of the Year and Ms. Erin Murphy for Pocahontas County Teacher of the Year! It is very much deserved and MMS is so lucky to have you both!
Let's get ready for the 2024-2025 school year! Help your Communities In Schools fill the buses with supplies for students.
Sports physical forms were sent home today for students who wanted one and extras are available in the office for the upcoming year. Forms must be dated on or after May 1st to play sports per WVSSAC guidelines. Community Care can complete these once filled out and signed by a parent or guardian at school, or they can be taken to your child’s doctor to be completed by them.
Super Scholar is tomorrow night at PCHS at 6:00. We hope to see all of our eligible students and families there.
Also we have lots of lost and found clothing that needs claimed at our building. Please find time to encourage your students to get their belongings before it is donated. Thanks!
Help us celebrate our March stars!
Communities in schools will be sponsoring a fill the bus drive on Friday, May 3. School supplies, hygiene, products, children's tennis shoes, undergarments and socks are among the items needed. Buses will be parked at each dollar store in the county from 9 to 4. Additionally, there will be a bus at first Friday on May 3 from 5 to 7 in Marlinton. If you cannot donate at this time, please help spread the word!! Thank you!
If you are able, please help our county schools...we appreciate all of our families and community members!
All 8th grade students will ride buses to PCHS tomorrow morning for 8th grade move up day. The students were given the name of their bus and we will provide help at bus exchange in the morning to help with this transition. They will return home from PCHS buses on a normal schedule.
There will be no school on Friday for students for required staff meetings.
Get ready for some summer fun!
Today, Math teachers will pass out an informational letter about a research study that is taking place with our math classes. Our classes have been asked to participate in a study lead by WestEd and the American Institutes of Research who are interested in learning more about what middle school students think about math. We are providing this letter to parents and guardians to explain this study and provide them with an opportunity to opt their child out of taking the survey. If you are choosing to opt out of this survey please return the letter before April 29, 2024. Thank you.
Please send your eclipse glasses back to school and we will ship them to Latin America for children to view the October eclipse. Thank you!
Please see Ms. Hill upon returning to MMS on Monday.
